Hot Zone Part 1

This book reminds me a lot of the movie Outbreak. It is hard to believe all of this really happened, and it was all fairly recent. I have loved the book so far! My least favorite part of the book was the first descriptive part of Charles Monet. The book is also a little confusing when it jumps back and forth to different places and times. I would never want to have anything to do with a level 4 virus. I agree with the people from USAMRID that all of the people who investigate these viruses for a living are crazy! I was sure that Nancy Jaxx was going to die from the Ebola. If I where her I would never want anything to do with any viruses ever again. She is brave. I can’t wait to keep reading and see what other exciting things happen!
Is it ok if I post all four parts now?

The Hot Zone: Part 1

I have alot of summer work so i am trying to get ahead of it while I have time.

I am really enjoying this book. I didn't realize how much viruses interest me. The scary thing about Ebola and Marburg breakouts is that it could happen anytime. If it affects one person then it gets everywhere. I am suprised that Nurse Mayinga didnt affect many people with her virus, I thought that EVERYBODY was going to be infected. Part 1 has confused me alot. I dont like how one time it is talking about how Marburg and Ebola affect you and then the next paragraph it is talking about Nancy Jaax and her job. I agree with Phebe that there are WAY too many Johnsons. I had to remind myself who was who many times. I am the oppisite of Phebe and Isa, I like reading about what the viruses do to you. It is disturbing but it interest me for some reason!!

I'm not sure if we are allowed to talk about this since it's extra credit, but does anyone know how to propagate their begonia? I know how to do the coleus.

The Hot Zone Part 1

I will be out of town a lot this summer so I am trying to get ahead on some of the due dates!

I ended up reading Part 1 much quicker than I intended...I was not able to put it down! The only parts I am not enjoying are the descriptions of how the viruses affect the people. They are a little disturbing and I could do without them. While I'm reading I tend to get a little confused with the time changes and also how so many people have the last name Johnson...it's hard to keep them straight. Viruses have always been a subject I enjoyed and by reading this book I am learning many things I did not know, but I still have so many questions about them. Nancy Jaxx is very brave to be working with Ebola. When she cut her hand I thought for sure that she would become infected. I'm amazed that this story is real and happened not to long ago!

The Hot Zone: Part 2

The second part to this book seemed a lot less confusing. There wasn't as much switching back and forth to have to keep up with.

Throughout the book, the author will describe certain little things in detail and it helps me picture them. When Jaxx's hand cut was described in part one, I  got an uneasy feeling. In part two, when the two scientists sniffed the test tube, I got an uneasy feeling again. I just knew that smelling the tube was not a good idea at all. I mean, Mrs. Gina tells us all the time to not sniff something in the lab! What were these guys thinking?!

I thought the glow test in the storage room seems very interesting. I would be terrified and probably feeling claustrophobic sitting in that room with the microscope and seeing the sample of Ebola glow. I would want to get out of that room and away from that virus as soon as possible.

I'm not only surprised but also confused with the fact that none of the workers at the Reston Monkey House have gotten the virus yet, they've been handling the monkeys without the proper protection and without caution. Reading this book has been turning me into a germaphobe because I realized that I have no idea what kinds of viruses are just sitting on things I deal with every day.

The Hot Zone: Part 1

Okay,  I leave for camp and will be gone on some due dates; so I'm getting a head start to prevent late posts!

I originally thought this book was going to be boring, but I couldn't put it down after I got into it! It's really graphic; I got a little nauseous when I was reading the "colorful" descriptions of the puke from those infected with Marburg. The book sort of confuses me with the going back and forth, it helps to go back to get all the dates straight. Nancy Jaxx seems like a kickbutt kind of person! It made me realize how serious ebola and Marburg are when they said she couldn't get vaccines for level three viruses so they put her in level 4 biohazard because there's nothing to do to help anyways. I would've been turned away by that and found a new career, but she didn't hesitate to work in the ebola suite. I thought Nancy was going to be a goner when they talked about her cut, glad she didn't get ebola!

Is anyone else's begonia dying?

WELCOME TO THE NEW "GANG"

Welcome APBio class of 2013-2014!

This will be our summer communication. Remember to react and speak to eachother's posts once we get started.  If you have already sent me your email address I have invited you to become an author on this blog.
Make sure you also become a follower!

This is meant to be a fun way to immerse yourself in biology over the summer, catch up on terms that are rusty, learn new terms to which we will refer all year, and try and keep something living... alive :)
