Scavenger Hunt Post #1

The vocabulary word I used for this picture is Archaebacteria. Archaebacteria is a unicellular microorganism that live in EXTREME conditions, Places so extreme such as a volcano or a deep ocean. They don't need oxygen or or light to live. I chose to take a picture of a oven because I am nowhere near a extreme condition, so I thought that an oven can get up to a very high degree so that is extreme!

The vocabulary word I used for this picture is Niche. Niche is the way of life of a species and how an organization or population responds to the distribution of resources. I chose to take a picture of a tomato because it is a resource that the population of the world uses. Tomatoes start out as a plant and they respond to the resources such as water and light, and use them to make tomatoes. Then the population (humans) respond with eating them.

The vocabulary word I used for this picture is Altruistic Behavior. Altruistic Behavior is the documented animal behavior where a animal sacrifices themselves for another animal. I took a picture of my sort of new puppy (Weezie) that is 4 months old and my lab (penny) that is about 5 years old. Penny acts like a mom to Weezie and sort of takes care of her.

The vocabulary word i chose for this picture is Adaptation of an animal. Adaptation of an animal is the features of a animal to help it survive. This picture is of a Daddy Long Leg. Their adaptations are it is brown so it can camouflage itself and it has thin legs and a small body which makes it hard to see them.

The vocabulary word i chose for the next two pictures is Xylem. Xylem is a type of transport tissue in vascular plants that transport water. Celery is a plant that has a xylem and you can see it very clearly. In biology a year ago we did a lab where you get a piece of celery and put it in colored water. When i was researching about xylems I thought that this would show the concept well!! The red water traveled up the xylems and you can see the red at the tip of the celery stick.

Hello, Mrs. Lory, these are my pictures. My email isn't working for whatever reason so I'm using Anish's blog in order to send them. -Varsha

Scavenger Hunt Post 1

This fly is an example of an r-strategist organism. These types of organisms have short lifespans and rely on rapid and plentiful reproduction to survive.
The bud on this plant is used in asexual reproduction. Asexual reproduction is a process in which one parent has both sex organs necessary for reproduction, and can reproduce on its own without the help of another parent. Asexual reproduction is common among plants.
This dog is exhibiting the conditions of homeostasis, or stable internal conditions.
Humans are an example of a k-strategist organism. K-strategist organisms have longer lifespans have less offspring when reproducing. These types of organisms can compete successfully for limited resources and population numbers are usually at a constant.
This plant is an autotroph. Autotrophes have the ability to create nutritional substances from inorganic substances, in this case water and sunlight.

Bio Fun Photos Week 1

Here is a prime example of the cuticle layer of a plant. The cuticle layer protective film covering the epidermis of leaves, young shoots and other aerial plant organs without periderm.

This yellow jacket (hard to see, I know) is an example of a pollinator. Honestly, they are not primarily pollinators as they are hunting insects that feast on other insects, but, on occasion, these "meat bees" pollinate. Pollinators are biotic agents that move pollen from the male anthers of a flower to the female stigma creating fertilization.

Look closely at this picture. You will notice two fornicating turtles. On a recent trip to the zoo, Phebe and I happened to come across these wild beasts which are a clear example of mating behavior.

Long day plants, like these clovers, are plants that flower only after longer exposure to sunlight. These clovers blossomed in the summer.

This bird's nest and the surrounding tree branches/area are examples of a niche. A niche is the specific area an organism inhabits.

Hi guys. As you can see, I've posted some really great photos. I hope you all enjoy. I'm new to the whole "blogging" thing so get off my case if I make some mistakes (Anish). Well thanks. Also, I'm reading that book. That is a quality piece of writing. Good stuff.

I leave for camp tomorrow!

Because I've been throwing this out on every single social media account i have.......

Im leaving for camp tomorrow! I will be gone from June 22nd through July 5th. If you want to send me a letter ( please do, its sad when youre the one kid who doesnt get letters from people other than their parents and grandparents), you can send me one at:

Isabel Gutierrez- Riverside
Camp Skyline Ranch
P.O. Box 287
Mentone, AL 35984

You can send funny jokes, pictures, newspaper clippings, current events...anything. It'll be the only contact I have with the outside world for two weeks.

The Hot Zone Part 4

The ending of this book confused me a little bit at the beginning. I also didn't love the ending. I was hoping for some big outbreak or something exciting. This last part did not seem very important to me. I agree with Maggie that its impressive that Richard Preston went to Kitum Cave and the monkey house. If I was him I would definitely not do that. If Ebola Reston breaks out again I wonder how we will stop it since it is air born. It did not affect the people who got it but next time it shows up it might. It is scary that if this virus appears again we may not be able to stop it.

Scavenger Hunt Post #1

         1. Animal that has a segmented body - An animal with a segmented body has a head, thorax, and abdomen. This a photo of an ant.

          2. Parasitism - the relationship where one organism or species benefits
from another. These three photos are all examples of certain parasites. The jar and the model are heart worms. The scientific name is Dirofiliria Immitis. This parasite is transmitted by mosquitoes. The picture below is an example of hookworm eggs. Puppies and adult dogs can become infected with this intestinal parasite.

        3. Exoskeleton - an external supportive covering of an animal.
The two photos shown are of a flea. Fleas are common parasites of dogs
and cats. Their exoskeletons make them hard to kill.
