It is a little difficult to see but there are four small and young leaves between the big leaves. Within these young leaves is a plant hormone called auxin. Here is a specific area where auxin is produced. Auxin promotes growth in new areas of a plant and promotes the growth of seeds and fruits in a plant. Auxin also softens the cell wall which makes it easier for the new leaves to grow and also that is why new leaves and stems are always soft.

This fern is also known as a frond. Fronds are simply defined as divided leaves. Fronds are mainly found in ferns than any other plant in the world. The "stem" of this fern is one big leaf that branches off into other leaves. Fronds can be found in other plants but some botanologists consider the fern the only frond plant in existence.
